Blue Heeler, San Miguel de Allende

Blue Heeler, San Miguel de Allende

Photograph by Jay Koppelman, Your Shot

I grabbed this shot of a blue heeler dog in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico . Sometimes it seems that there are two completely separate worlds that are in existence: that of the humans and the other, which belongs to the animals. In this photo the humans are definitely unaware of all the interaction that goes on in the animal world just feet away. I wonder what's going through this dog's mind.

Eastern Gray Kangaroos, Australia

Photograph by Emilien Anglada, Your Shot

These are wild eastern gray kangaroos shot on the west coast of Australia . I was going for a walk in the bush and unfortunately scared them off. They fled away in a hurry toward the native forest. These are part of Roxie's crew, a kangaroo that was once like a domestic pet at Dellis's bush stay in Soulhaven.

The clownish grin of a bridled parrotfish reveals its power tools: grinding teeth used to scrape algae from rock. Though sometimes destructive to individual corals, the fish's efforts are mostly beneficial. Without them, algal growth could smother the reef. Scarus frenatus

Photograph by Anthony Davis, Your Shot

A caiman rescued by the ARCAS organization in Guatemala gets the eye from a ring of turtles. Founded in 1989, ARCAS strives to rehabilitate animals seized from poachers and illegal pet traders, eventually releasing most back into the wild. As one of hundreds of travelers fortunate enough to volunteer at ARCAS each year, I spent long, hot, but enjoyable days cleaning and feeding parrots , scarlet macaws, spider monkeys , howler monkeys , and other species under pressure in Central America.

Taken in June this year during a game drive at Nakuru National Park in Kenya . Rounding a bend on the track I came upon not one but seven of these magnificent young lions draped across the branches of an acacia tree. Some are dozing and some are looking disdainfully at me. I was transfixed by these superb, regal creatures. What a privilege for me to have witnessed this amazing moment.

Wildebeest, Serengeti

On a recent safari in the Serengeti of Tanzania , I captured this image of an infant wildebeest keeping up with its mother. These remarkable animals can run at the same speed of the adults within 45 minutes of their birth. Finding ourselves in the middle of thousands of these animals migrating across the vast Serengeti was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

Sally Lightfoot Crab, Gal pagos Islands

Sally Lightfoot Crab, Gal pagos Islands

Photograph by Erika Phillips

In the Galápagos Islands , I tried capturing the brilliant colors of the creatures that scrambled over the rocks. They were so fast and so eager to get away from all of us crazy tourists with their long shiny lenses that I figured it was a lost cause. This Sally Lightfoot crab decided that I meant no harm and just politely danced for me in the sunlight less than a foot away. She gave me several gifts that day besides the dazzling hues ... she gave me a chance to enjoy light, beauty and a magical brief connection.

Blue-Tongued Lizard, Australia

Blue-Tongued Lizard, Australia

Photograph by Kathy Parker, Your Shot

Australian blue-tongued lizards are widespread over our great country. This particular species is a "common" or "Eastern" blue-tongued lizard, found in the eastern parts of Australia . Living on a farm in the South East of South Australia, we find many of these lizards lazily crawling around our yard, especially during the warmer months. This lizard was courtesy of our hunter-gatherer cat, which is brave enough to bring all sorts of amazing creatures to our back door for inspection and approval!
