I took this "once-in-a-lifetime" shot at Klein's Camp in the Serengeti, Tanzania . We came upon these lions at 7:17 in the morning. I scrambled for my two camera bodies (Nikon D4 and D3s and 200mm-400mm and 500mm) and got the shot! Exactly six minutes later the first lion got up and within another five minutes, three were sleeping and the other three had gone off into the bush! I have been taking wildlife photos for over 20 years, but this has got to be my special moment!

Chamaeleo monachus is found solely on Socotra, as are 90 percent of the island's other reptiles. Local people believe the chameleon is magic: It's said that a person hearing its hiss will lose the ability to speak.

I've been a photographer for more than 25 years. This is an image from my "Camargue Wild Horses" collection, composed of around 50 photos. I took it around a month ago during my trip to the Camargue Nature Park, where I had the luck to shoot these wonderful animals in their natural environment. I used a Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 70-200mm L lens.

We encountered a pod of bottlenose dolphins near Los Islotes in Baja California Sur, Mexico . The shot was taken from the deck of the National Geographic Sea Bird, where I was working as a deckhand for the months of February and March.

I was driving in Oregon when a rabbit crossed paths with my car. I slammed on the brakes and stopped while the bunny shot across the rest of the road. I thought "why not?" and pulled out my camera while it brushed itself off, and it appeared it was praying when I captured the photo.

Flamingos , fiercely loyal in wild flocks, move in unison when there is a threat. Here, near Sisal, Mexico , a research plane is passing overhead. Several major breeding groups live in estuaries around the Caribbean and beyond.

With a strong vision and sense of smell, and the ability to reach up to 40 miles per hour, coyotes are symbolic of adventure. I was fortunate enough to find this wild coyote while visiting Yellowstone National Park . It leaped and ran under tree branches and between boulders. I made sure not to disturb the coyote, and when it lay down on top of a hill I was able to include the coyote's environment in the background. This image displays the coyote's vast habitat, and a sense of mysteriousness and exploration, through its single eye staring back at the camera.

I captured this image while visiting the butterfly exhibit in Houston, Texas . I noticed this leaf being illuminated by the sun and was just hoping a butterfly would land for a few seconds so I could get a few shots. I'm glad I was patient.

In Moorea, French Polynesia, the warm, turquoise-blue waters are often the place for some special encounters. Swimming among the sharks, the rays, and the varied variety of fish is quite easy. This shot was taken from a boat with a remote-controlled drone.

On photo safari in the Serengeti in February 2012, we caught sight of this baby among a herd of grazing elephants . It was cute how the young elephant would walk in and out of its mother's legs as she was walking along.
